Reaching back to the society
Not forgetting our less privileged, MIR5 is holding a community service, for the first time ever, on the 26th of August 2006 for TOUCH community kids in Climb Adventure. The main aim of this community service would be to introduce to the kids the joys of mountaineering and also, to hopefully inspire them with the Spirit of Mountaineering.

2 June 2006 - MIR 5 returns after a successful summit of Mt Hanumman Tibba
|
|
All members of MIR 5 have successfully summited Mt Hanuman Tibba on the 20th of May.
Starting at 1a.m, with only the moonlight and their headlamps guiding their way, the members pressed on, nonetheless, in the extreme cold weather before conquering a 70-degree slope with powdered snow to reach the summit. This year, there were no accompanying seniors on the climb. Good job, MIR 5!

MIR5 has departed for their expedition after 1 year of hard work and preparation.
This year, due to the unstable political situation in Nepal, the team has switched their expedition
location and would be going to India in an attempt to summit Hanuman Tibba(5984m) in the northern state of Himachal Pradesh.
This is the first time that MIR is venturing into India, and the team is expected to be back in June.

The segment, which would also feature MIR5, is set to be aired on 16 May at 0930 pm on channel U.

MIR 5 member Ang Kheng Wee gave a talk to ODAC students at Raffles Junior
College. The talk introduced the students to the MIR programme as well as the
basics of mountaineering.

MIR hosted its
annual Media Launch at Saffron Hall at the Alumni House in NUS. Dr Vivian
Balakrishnan, Minister for Community Development, Youth and Sports and Second
Minister for Trade and Industry was the guest-of-honour of the event. Other
guests included NUS staff, sponsors as well as MIR alumni. The event was
subsequently featured in Lian He Wan Bao and Lian He Zao Bao.

MIR5 participated in the National Library’s Mind Matters Talk Series.
The talk was conducted at Ang Mo Kio Community Library. Student leaders Dannies
Ang and Darren Luo spoke to the public about the Make It Real Programme and the
life skills they have learnt. A photo exhibition featuring MIR5’s Technical
Mountaineering Course was also set up at the library as accompaniment to the
Mind Matters Talk.

Breakfast Club. The interview was part of the National Library’s promotion of their Mind Matters Talk Series. Part

MIR5 was featured in CHOICES magazine.
Titled “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough”, the article mainly featured
MIR5’s Technical Mountaineering Course in
New Zealand
. MIR5 members Benjamin Yap, Darren Luo, Dannies Ang and Soo Jieling were also
interviewed and featured in the article.

10th December 2005 to 20th December 2005 - Technical Mountaineering Course
|
|
MIR5 has successfully completed their Technical Mountaineering Course with Alpine Guides (Aoraki) Ltd, at Mount Cook, New Zealand. The team was based in Kelman Hut at the head of the Tasman Glacier and the course covered both technical instruction of basic mountaineering skills to ready them for their expedition in May 2006, and the ascent of Mount Alymer (2699m – above picture).
Upon return from New Zealand, the team has since resumed their regular training and is now busy with preparation for the media launch in Feb 2006.

7 December 2005 - Send-off for MIR5 at Changi Airport
|
|
MIR5 has left for New Zealand Mt Cook for a 10-day overseas technical mountaineering course and the whole team would only be back on 5th Jan 06. The course will prepare them adequately for their Himalayan expedition next May where they will venture into uncharted territories and scale greater heights.

4 December 2005 - Sports & Fitness Expo/Marathon Expo 2005
|
|
The hosting of public talks allows the public to be more aware of the growing trend of
mountaineering in Singapore as well as MIR’s efforts to hone young mountaineers.
MIR participated in the Sports and Fitness Expo 2005 and was fortunate enough to be able to give a
public talk to sports enthusiasts who turned up at the exhibition.

14 November to 10 December - Photo Exhibition at NUS Central Library
|
|
Photo exhibitions are one of the best ways to reach out to the NUS student population.
A photo exhibition was held at the Central Library at NUS with the aim of not just publicising
Make-It-Real as a mountaineering programme offered by the school,
but more importantly, to create awareness amongst the student population about the sport of mountaineering,
the basics required of the programme as well as some fundamental information on mountaineering.

30 September 2005 - MIR 5 Bukit Timah Trek
|
|
MIR 5 starts its training at Bukit Timah. This long walk with 15kg of loads along Bukit Timah Trek
aims to build up general fitness of the team as well as to build stronger bonds among teammates for this newly formed team!

18 September 2005 - NUS Centennial Challenge
|
|
MIR members are at the NUS Centennial Challenge to cheer on Dr William Tan.
Dr William Tan will attempt to clock the fastest time for 100 km
in a wheelchair around the NUS. Dr William Tan hopes that every kilometer in his ultramarathon will generate
interest in the field of Paediatric Oncology and give hope to children with
cancer.

10 September 2005 - MIR 5 Stairs Training
|
Stairs training is one of the
toughest routine as it trains both the physical strength
as well as the mental endurance. With the assessment set
at completing 10 sets of 22-storeys with 15-kg load under
5 minutes for each set. This is surely one of the most
demanding fitness test around.
